About
During my 16+ years as a software engineer at ClinPhone/PAREXEL I built and tested many complex projects to an extremely high standard earning several awards. I worked with relational databases and SQL in addition to in-house technologies. After leaving PAREXEL I upskilled in various technologies and languages, including the OOP language Java. I achieved Oracle certification in Java in September 2020.
In early 2022, I decided to take my career in a new direction and focus on data analysis. In late April 2022, I completed the Department for Education funded, Babington 12-week data analysis bootcamp where I learned advanced Excel skills through a uCertify online course and completed a work-based project. The project involved the cleaning and analysis of 10,000 sales transactions which were recorded over a 4-year period. I used Power Query to import, clean, and shape the data and Power Pivot to establish relationships between the tables/queries. I wrote a comprehensive, 19-page report detailing the data gathering, data cleaning and analysis of the data and recorded a 10-slide PowerPoint presentation to highlight my findings.
In 2024, I worked for the Lear Corporation, a manufacturer of vehicle fabrics, as a commercial analyst and expanded upon my Excel knowledge. For one project, I was tasked with comparing actual sales and scheduled sales against forecast sales for each PartID and Customer combination over a set timeframe. Those combinations with the largest discrepancies would be identified and the Forecast updated accordingly to better predict future sales. Extracting 3 datasets, namely Sales, Schedule and Forecast from the in-house software, I created a Key column (= PartID_Customer) for each in Excel, then used Power Query to unpivot columns and merge the data to form a master table. From this table, I summarised sales, scheduled and forecast turnover data on Key using the SUMIFS function, making use of array formulas. Conditional formatting was used to quickly identify large differences between these turnovers.
With my knowledge of Power Query and Power Pivot (component technologies found within Power BI), my advanced Excel skills, commercial experience of relational databases and SQL, knowledge of OOP programming, analytical thinking skills, strong attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and willingness to learn new technologies I would be successful in a data analyst role.
