About
Studying for a degree in English Literature helped me develop the ability to present complex information in a clear and uncluttered form. These skills were improved through my postgraduate study of history, which has also given me further experience in extensive, specialist research. German language training formed an integral part of my M.Litt course. During my Ph.D research, I pursued further German language training at the University of Birmingham, as well as on self-funded courses in Bonn and Vienna.
My job as a Public Relations & Media Assistant for an environmental regeneration charity gave me the opportunity to apply my academic skills by presenting varied and sometimes specialist information in concise and easily digestible press releases. I needed the confidence to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of colleagues and contacts, while working between three different offices. Both during and after my doctoral research at Birmingham, I have gained some experience of public speaking through presenting my research at academic seminars and conferences.
My training and experience in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes) has greatly enhanced my appreciation of the clear and correct usage of the English language. I have also needed to be well organised, able to manage time effectively, responsive to the needs of students and co-operative with other teachers.
