We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Student Support Officer to join our Student Services team based at Sandwell College, on a fixed-term maternity cover basis, commencing May 2026. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to students’ wellbeing, engagement, and overall college experience.
As a Student Support Officer, you will provide high-quality support to students, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and succeed in their studies. You will work closely with teaching staff, safeguarding teams, and external agencies to ensure students receive the support they need to thrive.
This is a varied and student-facing role, ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting young people and creating a positive, inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide pastoral and wellbeing support to students
- Support students facing personal, social, or academic challenges
- Work closely with safeguarding and support services to manage concerns
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records
- Liaise with staff, parents/carers, and external agencies as required
- Promote positive behaviour, attendance, and engagement
- Support student interventions and action plans
- Contribute to the delivery of student support initiatives and events
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Essential
- Experience working in a student support, pastoral, or welfare role
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with young people
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality
- Good organisational and administrative skills
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, and inclusion
Desirable
- Experience working in a further education or school environment
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and multi-agency working
- Relevant qualification in education, youth work, or support services
