While completing her Level 3 Photography course at Oldham College, student Lacey took part in a multimedia programme delivered on campus in partnership with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation (RFF).
The programme gave students practical training and an insight into careers across photography, filmmaking, animation, music production, DJing and podcasting. It also included a Level 1 qualification in Developing Self-Confidence and Self-Awareness.
Lacey engaged positively throughout the programme and showed a strong interest in developing her creative skills and she was invited to take part in a further opportunity alongside her course.
She joined a young creative team working with clothing brand Lyle & Scott and sports media platform Cheeky Sport Media on a summer campaign, gaining hands-on work experience.
Lacey put her photography and videography skills into practice, helping to plan and capture campaign content. Lacey photographed and filmed young participants, directed them during the shoot and contributed ideas to the creative team.
She also stepped outside her comfort zone, taking part in on-camera interviews and speaking with the Lyle & Scott design team to share her ideas around future clothing designs.
Speaking on the experience, Lacey said: “What I most enjoyed was the video photography and learning how to use different equipment. I’ve loved learning about all of it, videoing with other people and seeing them have fun. I also loved working with the models, seeing the different poses.”
Victoria Lowe, Head of Opportunities – North West, Rio Ferdinand Foundation said: “When we first met Lacey at Oldham College, she was engaging in our programme alongside her peers, so seeing her independently travel to Salford and step into a completely new professional environment was a huge moment.
“Her confidence grew throughout the experience, and she wasn’t afraid to share ideas, direct the young people during the shoot or speak on camera. We’re incredibly proud of Lacey’s development and, most importantly, her determination to keep learning and creating opportunities for her future.”
Her attitude, creativity and commitment also impressed the Cheeky Sport Media team, who surprised her with a DJI Osmo camera and gimbal worth almost £500, giving Lacey professional equipment to continue developing her content creation skills.
The experience has helped Lacey build her confidence, develop her skills and gain valuable insight into the creative industries as she works towards her ambition of becoming a journalist.
