Nottingham College Launches New Defence & Military Career Pathway

Published on 19/01/2026

Nottingham College has announced the launch of a brand-new Defence and Military Pathway, opening to students from September 2026 and offering a direct route into one of the UK’s fastest‑growing employment sectors.

With the UK Defence and Military sector expected to create thousands of new jobs by 2030, Nottingham College’s new pathway is designed to equip students with the technical expertise, practical skills and professional behaviours that employers in defence-related industries are increasingly seeking.

The Defence and Military Pathway reflects the rapid evolution of the sector, driven by emerging technologies and expanding opportunities across the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, as well as within wider defence industries. Students will gain exposure to cutting‑edge fields such as aerospace and naval engineering, weapons systems, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

James Thorne, Assistant Principal of Curriculum Skills said:

“Our Defence & Military Pathway has been designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, personal qualities and behaviours that employers in this vital industry are seeking. Whether they’re in engineering, cybersecurity or uniformed services, this pathway will help them become future ready and access exciting new career opportunities.”

A gateway to future-ready careers

The pathway is open to students studying courses in Engineering (Operations, Welding or Mechanical Manufacturing), Networking and Cybersecurity, and Uniformed Protective Services, offering a structured programme that runs alongside their core qualification.

Designed in collaboration with industry expectations, the pathway goes beyond academic learning. Students will take part in a purposeful year-long programme that develops key employability skills such as teamwork, discipline, communication and leadership — all highly valued within defence and military environments.

Participants can expect a varied and engaging experience, including physical training, defence and military industry days, hands-on taster sessions with armed forces representatives, team-building activities, trips and excursions. These opportunities are intended to give students real insight into the demands and rewards of careers in this vital national sector.

Building skills for tomorrow’s defence workforce

As well as preparing students for immediate progression into defence-related roles, Nottingham College believes the pathway will support long‑term career development across a wide range of future growth areas. These include logistics and supply chain management, science, innovation and research, medical and resilience planning, education and leadership, and construction and infrastructure.

Taking part in the Defence and Military Pathway involves an additional 15 days of timetabled activity throughout the academic year. Places are limited, reflecting the tailored nature of the programme and its focus on high‑quality, immersive experiences.

Opportunities across multiple disciplines

Students completing the pathway will be well placed for progression into a variety of occupations, including cyber security professionals, aerospace and mechanical engineers, IT network specialists, data analysts and public services associate professionals. The pathway also provides a strong foundation for those aspiring to officer roles within the armed forces or specialist positions supporting government and defence organisations.
