Laura’s journey from adult learner to business owner

Laura arrived at Bury College as an adult learner seeking a career change.

She started by completing a hair and beauty course, and this gave her the skills she needed to start working in the industry, gain experience and become self-employed.

“My course took me right up from the basics. After finishing it, I had the knowledge and skills I needed to go and work in the industry.”, said Laura.

Discovering a new passion

It was whilst running her own salon that Laura discovered she enjoyed teaching others. Feeling inspired, she decided to return to Bury College University Centre, this time to study the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed).

Laura reflected on her experience returning to her studies, commenting: “I learnt a lot of useful information on my Cert Ed course, including how to write lesson plans, and I also got hands-on experience teaching in classrooms.”

“My studies were really manageable. If you have other commitments, such as children or work, it’s possible to fit your studies in around your personal life and there is financial support available from the College.”, she added.

Since graduating, Laura has opened her own training academy, Younique Talent, specialising in alternative education provision.
