Aviation Students Jet Off on 22-mile Walk for Charity

The sky is the limit for a group of Nottingham College Aviation students who raised an impressive £1,500 by completing a demanding 22-mile walk to East Midlands Airport in support of three charities close to their hearts.

As part of a student-led social action project, the students organised a large-scale fundraising walk to raise both money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation, Neuroendocrine Cancer and Diabetes Research.

Ahead of take-off, the group showed outstanding commitment throughout the planning and preparation process. Each charity was chosen for its personal significance to members of the group, giving extra meaning to the challenge and making their motivation, teamwork and determination truly inspiring.

On 16 April, 26 students set off at 8.30am from Nottingham College’s flagship City Hub campus to take on the challenging route to East Midlands Airport. Despite the physical demands of the 22-mile journey, the group touched down just seven hours later. On arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by staff from East Midlands Airport and Manchester Airport Group, who greeted them with cheers and well-deserved refreshments.

The students have so far raised an incredible £1,500 across the three charities, with the total continuing to gain altitude.

For 17-year-old Level 3 Aviation student Mollie, this fundraising challenge was particularly close to her heart, with many fellow students being inspired by her story, she said: “I am walking to raise money for Neuroendocrine Cancer because my mum is living with it, and every day I see her strength and courage. I want to turn that strength into hope by supporting research, treatment, and care that can make a difference for her and for others fighting the same battle.”

Nottingham College Aviation tutor, Louise Mantle, said: “This walk is not only a test of endurance and resilience but also a demonstration of the students’ commitment to making a positive difference in their communities. This incredible effort showcased teamwork as part of their Team Leadership unit, along with their social action project. I feel so proud of every single student from this cohort. They are all facing different challenges and barriers in some way yet work so hard.”
