Whether you’re facing retirement, no longer want to deal with the personal liabilities of industry, or you crave a creative outlet, teaching offers a fantastic opportunity to try a new career that makes use of your existing skills.

A career in Teaching allows you to:

  • Unleash your creativity
  • Provides great job satisfaction
  • Pass on your knowledge and experience to help train the next generation of problem solvers
  • Future-proof your career prospects

Making a career move into teaching is probably easier than you think. There are two basic things that you need:

The academic qualifications/industry experience - All you need to teach at a College is at least a level 3 qualification in the core subject. Level 3 qualifications include A-levels or other equivalent qualifications in related subjects. If you’ve been working in Engineering, it’s likely you have these already – if you don’t, you should find achieving them to be straightforward.

Teacher training - You do not need any teaching qualifications to become a Lecturer, but you do need to agree to work towards obtaining them. This allows anybody to make the change into Lecturing.

What will your duties be?

Whilst you’ll be expected to follow the curriculum, the way you approach teaching is largely up to you. You’ll be planning your own lessons and seminars and developing or sourcing your own teaching materials and concepts.

Your role will include:

  • Creating and marking assignments
  • Assessing students’ progress
  • Supporting students and helping with problems
  • Supervising practical work
  • Professional development and workshops

What’s stopping you?

With world-leading expertise in areas such as aerospace, the UK has a thriving engineering sector. Teaching offers the seasoned pro a fantastic opportunity to give something back to the industry.

With the very low supply of qualified teachers in STEM subjects, new teachers are in huge demand, and with the low barriers to entry, you’ll be moving up the career ladder quickly without a protracted and costly re-training process.

There has never been a better time to change career.
